Appearance:
Her most notable feature is that she looks like an eight year old girl. Second are her blue
 eyes and wavy, light auburn hair, which probably derive from the fact she's
 half-Japanese, half-British. Her clothes tend toward more mature styles, like sleeveless
 turtlenecks, capris, and light sweaters.


Abilities:
Her abilities are purely natural; even the way she can "smell" a fellow member of the Black
 Organization, a mysterious criminal syndicate, is probably more psychological than
 anything else. She has a college education despite her youth and worked for the
 syndicate as a chemist, so she has a wide variety of knowledge in this field. She's also a
 great shot, but doesn't carry a gun.


Since arriving at Facility, Ai has gained a basic chemistry set, courtesy of Alphonse Elric.
 She also won a disc of her APTX 4869 research from the scroll hunt and several
 pieces of lab equipment with an electric heat source from the zombie hunt.


Personality:
Because she's on the run from her old employers, Ai keeps personal information close to the
 vest and won't divulge details unless necessary. She tends to be dry and sarcastic,
 making snarky or morbid comments while appearing bored with everything, 
though this attitude hides her inner sadness and fear. She addresses others formally, 
using family names for everyone except her friend, Ayumi. Whenever Organization members
 appear, she freezes up and hides or clings to the few people she trusts, namely
 Conan. Despite her reserved nature, she doesn't try to fit in as a child and,
 because of her fatalism, intelligence, and morbid sense of humor, she can be a disarming
 person. She also continues to grieve the loss of her sister, whose murder by the syndicate
 was the final offense that made Shiho rebel.


Deep down, she's a good person, but her entire life has been focused on survival, not
 goodness. What she would do to ensure her survival has changed dramatically since her series
 introduction. While in the Organization, she would've experimented on a criminal
 if he hadn't escaped first; later, as Ai, she aimed a fake gun at Conan's head
 to keep him from revealing his secret identity; most recently, she tried to
 sacrifice herself to save others from the syndicate member, Vermouth. From this, it's
 possible that she would sacrifice herself for her friends. Though she might say otherwise,
 she does care about justice. She just avoids the spotlight and yawns for good
 measure while doing it.

History:

Miyano Shiho was the second daughter of scientists Atsushi and Elena, a fact that carved out
 her path in life. While she was still too young to remember, they died in an
 "accident". Since then, Shiho was in the custody of her parents' secret employer, the Black
 Organization, that said her parents were eccentric and evil. Growing up, all Shiho
 knew other than the syndicate was her doting big sister, Akemi. For better or
 worse, the syndicate realized Shiho was a scientific prodigy, so they sent her to school in
 America and ordered her to complete her parents' research on a mysterious drug named
 Apotoxin 4869. The nature of this drug is still a mystery; though it can function
 as a perfect, traceless poison, it has a side effect that shrinks the rare
 victim to the size of a child. After completing her studies, Shiho returned to Japan to
 invent this drug and, likely due to the importance of her research, received the codename
 Sherry.


A few years later, a teen detective named Kudou Shin'ichi was poisoned with the apotoxin by
 a syndicate member, Gin, when he witnessed a blackmail deal. Shin'ichi ended up being
 the only victim of APTX 4869 whose death remained unconfirmed, since they never
 found his body. As the poison's inventor, Shiho was among the teams that searched
 Shin'ichi's abandoned house and discovered only the clothes from his childhood
 were missing. Since one of her lab rats didn't die, but shrank from the
 apotoxin, she realized Shin'ichi must have shrunk, too. Instead of informing her superiors,
 however, she went into the records and confirmed his death.


This quiet act of rebellion was not the beginning for Shiho. Already she felt distaste over
 the order to research human beings, though the intended subject, a murderer named
 Numabuchi, escaped. She also disapproved of the syndicate using APTX 4869 as a
 poison to kill people. But she was a scientist, not a spy or detective, so she continued her
 research in relative peace, met with her sister for the occasional lunch, and
 otherwise isolated herself in the lab. Though Shiho worried about Akemi, who had begun
 working for the Organization, at their last meeting Akemi gushed about the brilliant little
 boy she had met at the Mouri Detective Agency, Edogawa Conan, and cheerfully
 assured her sister that she was just fine.


Then, a few days later, a front page newspaper story claimed a thief from a billion yen
 robbery had committed suicide. In the article was a picture of Edogawa Conan, who closely
 resembled Kudou Shin'ichi, standing over the body of her dead sister. Shiho knew
 it wasn't suicide, but another "accident", so she gave her superiors an ultimatum:
 unless they told her why they killed Akemi, she would not continue APTX 4869
 research. For this betrayal, they handcuffed her to a pipe to await execution, but
 when she tried killing herself by swallowing her own poison, she shrank. Slipping
 out of the cuffs, she ran through the rain drenched streets of Tokyo until she collapsed in
 front of Kudou Shin'ichi's gate. That's where Shin'ichi's kind neighbor and
 confidante, Dr. Agasa, found her and took her in.


When Shiho woke, she and the professor invented her new alias, Haibara Ai, though the "Ai"
 character she chose was not for "love", but "sorrow". Ai then enrolled in Teitan
 Elementary, threw Conan for a loop when she revealed her identity and her
 knowledge of his being Kudou Shin'ichi, and began following his cases in the hopes that she
 could recover her APTX 4869 research and make an antidote. The Organization burned
 down her old research facility and corrupted the data disks with viruses,
 however, so she had to start from scratch. At first, she tolerated her classmates, a trio of
 eager kids calling themselves the Shounen Tantei Dan (Detective Boys), but slowly
 began to care for them and join in their adventures. A few times, Ai managed to invent
 imperfect antidotes that turned Conan back to normal for a day or a few hours, though she
 always warned him that any recklessness on his part could kill them both.


Along the way, Conan discovered tapes that Akemi had left for Shiho, and it turned out those
 tapes were encouraging recordings from Miyano Elena, revealing that Shiho's mother
 was a good, loving person. There have been times, however, when Conan and Ai left
 each other in the dark, and to this day Conan never told Ai the full story behind
 her sister's death, while Ai, among other things, never shared that Conan's love
 interest, Ran, saved her from Vermouth. They also found the telephone number of the
 Organization's boss, but after plenty of warnings on Ai's part, Conan didn't use it.


Despite being hunted by the Organization's best operatives and coming close to death at
 their hands, Ai began to ease out of paralyzing fear into a normal life of field trips and
 fashion magazines. It has been hinted that, since Conan rescued Ai more than once
 and encouraged her not to run away, she may have fallen in love with him. Ai also
 recently chose, after the encounter with Vermouth, not to go into FBI witness
 protection but to stay with Dr. Agasa and move forward in life. Her greatest concern is
 still keeping her cover, however, because she believes the Black Organization will
 inevitably find and destroy the traitor she's become.
